If you’re an aspiring drone pilot, you may be preparing to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) knowledge test (commonly known as the Part 107 test) to earn your remote pilot certificate.
Before you do though, you should make sure that you’re up to date on the newest change to the process. As of January 13, 2020, all applicants for the Part 107 test will be required to have an FAA Tracking Number (FTN), which will be issued upon the creation of an Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) account.
Wondering why the FAA is making this change? Well, having FTNs will make the process of applying for your remote pilot certificate easier.
This change will allow the FAA to keep track of each application using a unique FTN (which will reduce the amount of resources used for returned files when applicant information is inputted inconsistently or incorrectly). It will also get more people to start using IACRA and will make applying to take the knowledge test online easier in the future.
So, beginning January 13, 2020, anyone applying to take the FAA’s remote pilot exam will need to receive an FTN through IACRA. And, instead of the Applicant ID number, the FTN will be printed on the Airman Knowledge Test Report (AKTR).
